The Challenge of Conservation of Birds that Cross Continents and Cultures

    PROF. JULIET VICKERY

Following a Phd at Oxford, a post-doc at UEA and a research post at Scottish Natural Heritage Juliet took up a lectureship at the University of Edinburgh before moving to the NGO sector. She has led research teams in two conservation NGO’s, at the BTO focussing on the ecology and conservation of farmland birds and at the RSPB working on globally-threatened sites and species and migrant birds. Her research has focussed on “diagnosing causes of species decline and developing policy or practical solutions to stem or reverse  those declines.” She has published over 120 scientific papers and over 70 popular science articles and been co-editor of three books. Juliet is currently CEO of the BTO which represents a unique partnership between citizen scientists and professional staff. It delivers long-term nationwide data on population trends of breeding and wintering birds, alongside research to help understand drivers of those trends and find solutions to stem and ultimately reverse them.
