Recent advances in technology have opened up the potential to deploy audio devices to record bird song and other wildlife sounds. Whether for backyard sound projects like nocmig or co-ordinated national surveys, passive acoustic offers lots of potential, but also some pitfalls. In this talk Simon will review what we can learn from listening to bird sounds and how and when we can deploy new tech to complement what we can do as birders and surveyors.

 

Simon has worked at the BTO since the mid-1990’s on a range of bird surveys and research projects, including Bird Atlas 2007-11. In his current role as Principal Data Scientist he works with colleagues to develop the Breeding Bird Survey, BirdTrack and BTO’s growing bio-acoustic work. He is a keen birder and sound recordist. This project combines his passion for birds and migration with his day job at BTO, making sense of big data and citizen science.
