Briston

Image of Briston birding site

Briston is a large village about three and a half miles south of Holt. The surrounding area is largely rural containing the usual farmland species. Immediately to the south of the village, the area known as Briston Common holds both coniferous forest and damp deciduous woodland. A pleasant walk taking in these areas starts from Dover Farm, High Road NR24 2JQ crosses the upper reaches of the River Bure at Growle Abbey, continues south along Mill Lane to Thurning Mill and Craymere Beck and returns to Briston along Craymere Beck Road. On the north side of the village is the Stody estate with various permissive paths around what is largely farmland. An extensive area of woodland lies at the heart of the estate but access is limited to a small area at the southern end of the woods, public roads and bridleways. Firecrest have been recorded here in the spring.
