Hopton Fen

Image of Hopton Fen birding site

Fifteen hectares of lowland fen managed by the Suffolk Wildlife Trust. There is little open water except after heavy rain, but the extensive reed bed and sedges provide habitat for a variety of warblers. Grasshopper warblers breed, Cetti's are recent colonists and marsh harriers visit regularly and may (summer 2024) be nesting. The small colony of reed warblers attracts cuckoos, and this is a reliable site to hear and see these birds from late April through to the end of June. There is a perimeter path around the fen, part of which includes the long-distance Angles Way. However, the muddy and overgrown path to the north of the fen is difficult to negotiate: it's best to stay on the Angles Way. The easiest access to the fen is via the Angles Way from Hopton High Street.
Cattle graze during summer months.
