Out Head

Image of Out Head birding site

Point at the far end of West Sands from which parts of the Eden Estuary can be viewed. Can be accessed on foot by walking the length of West Sands. Alternatively, it is possible to drive most of the way along West Sands Road (between the beach and the golf course) and park at the road end, where a 5-10 minute walk along the path leads to Out Head.

Good for a variety of birds depending on the time of year, particularly seaduck, terns and waders. The dunes have small birds including stonechat, reed bunting, linnet, yellowhammer and skylark. Oystercatcher, curlew and sanderling are commonly seen on the sand, and other waders include ringed plover, grey plover and dunlin. Rarer waders are possible too, and a little stint was seen here in September 2021. In the estuary, there are often eiders, and red-throated diver, slavonian grebe and long-tailed duck are present in winter. Ospreys use the estuary to fish and can sometimes be seen on posts looking from Out Head during the late summer and early autumn. During late summer, terns and gannets fish in the area, and passing arctic skuas may come into the estuary to chase the terns. In the spring, this site can be good for migrant birds, with passage wheatears often seen in the fields between the car park and Out Head.
