Birds of the Red Sea

Eastern Desert

The Eastern Desert is a vast barren landscape of mountains and sand dunes. However, after a rare rainfall the desert comes to life with green plants springing up out of the sand and pools of water collecting as the rain flows through the wadis. Desert trips for hiking, quad bikes or 4x4 must be booked in advance so security permissions can be organised.

The migratory birds cross the desert and rest overnight seeking out pools of water or shelter in the Spring and Autumn.

The desert begins directly opposite El Gouna crossing the two main highways. El Gouna Farm and Recycling Plant are located closest but security permission is needed to enter.
